Eritreans

Eritreans are the people originating from or inhabiting Eritrea, a country located in the Horn of Africa. Eritrean identity is complex and multifaceted, shaped by a history of diverse ethnic groups, languages, religions, and a long struggle for independence.

Ethnic Groups: Eritrea is home to nine recognized ethnic groups, each with its own distinct language, customs, and traditions. These groups are: Tigrinya, Tigre, Saho, Afar, Beja, Bilen, Kunama, Nara, and Rashaida. The Tigrinya and Tigre are the largest ethnic groups.

Languages: Tigrinya and Arabic are the primary working languages of Eritrea. Other languages spoken in Eritrea include Tigre, Saho, Afar, Beja, Bilen, Kunama, Nara, and Rashaida.

Religion: The two major religions practiced in Eritrea are Christianity and Islam. Approximately half of the population adheres to Christianity, primarily of the Eritrean Orthodox Tewahedo Church. The other half adheres to Islam, predominantly Sunni.

Culture: Eritrean culture is a blend of indigenous traditions and influences from neighboring countries, as well as from periods of Italian colonization and Ethiopian rule. Traditional music, dance, and cuisine vary among the different ethnic groups. The Eritrean coffee ceremony is an important cultural ritual.

Diaspora: A significant Eritrean diaspora exists around the world, particularly in Europe, North America, and the Middle East. This diaspora has played an important role in supporting Eritrea's development and promoting its culture internationally. Many Eritreans left the country due to political and economic challenges.

Citizenship: Eritrean citizenship is governed by law, with criteria based on descent and naturalization.
