Low Islets (Tasmania)
Low Islets are a pair of small islands located in Bass Strait, off the north coast of Tasmania, Australia. They lie within the municipality of Circular Head.
The islands are significant for their seabird nesting colonies. Specifically, they are an important breeding site for short-tailed shearwaters (muttonbirds). The surrounding waters also provide habitat for various marine species.
Due to their ecological significance, access to Low Islets is typically restricted or requires permits to protect the nesting birds and their habitat from disturbance. Conservation efforts are in place to monitor and manage the shearwater populations and maintain the overall health of the island ecosystem. Information regarding access and conservation efforts is generally available through the Tasmanian Parks and Wildlife Service.
The islands' low elevation and exposed location make them susceptible to the effects of climate change, including sea-level rise and increased storm frequency, which pose a potential threat to the nesting sites and overall stability of the islands. Monitoring of these environmental factors is also part of ongoing conservation strategies.
