Sinbad (dog)

Sinbad was a mixed-breed dog, primarily notable for his service aboard the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter (USCGC) Campbell (WPG-32) during World War II. He served a full 11 years of sea duty.

Originally acquired as a gift for a Coast Guardsman's girlfriend, Sinbad proved unsuitable as a pet and was informally adopted by the crew of the Campbell in 1938. He became an unofficial but highly valued member of the crew, serving as a morale booster and mascot.

Sinbad’s duties, though largely symbolic, included standing watch, attending drills, and generally providing companionship to the sailors. He was known for his propensity for alcohol consumption and occasional mischievous behavior, earning him both reprimands and affection from the crew.

His wartime service involved participation in numerous North Atlantic convoys, enduring harsh weather conditions and enemy attacks. Sinbad reportedly witnessed several U-boat encounters and contributed to the overall morale of the crew during these perilous voyages.

Sinbad's popularity extended beyond the Campbell, with numerous news articles and photographs published about him during and after the war. He became a symbol of resilience and camaraderie for the U.S. Coast Guard.

Following his retirement from active duty, Sinbad lived out his days at the Barnegat Coast Guard Station in New Jersey. He died in 1951 and is remembered as one of the most famous mascots in Coast Guard history.
