James Cumming (artist)
James Cumming (1922-2009) was a Scottish landscape painter known for his evocative depictions of the Scottish Highlands and Islands, particularly the Outer Hebrides. Born in Dunfermline, Fife, he studied at Edinburgh College of Art under William Gillies and Leonard Rosoman.
Cumming's work is characterized by its use of rich color and texture, often employing a palette knife to create a sense of ruggedness and depth. He focused primarily on capturing the atmosphere and light of the Scottish landscape, rather than precise topographical accuracy. His paintings frequently feature crofts, lochs, and mountains, reflecting the harsh beauty of the region.
After graduating from Edinburgh College of Art, Cumming worked as an art teacher for a period before dedicating himself fully to painting. He exhibited widely throughout Scotland and internationally, including at the Royal Scottish Academy, the Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, and the Scottish Gallery in Edinburgh. His work is held in numerous public and private collections, including the Scottish Arts Council and the Fleming Collection.
Cumming's contribution to Scottish art is significant, particularly for his authentic and expressive portrayal of the Highlands and Islands. He is remembered as a dedicated artist and a respected figure within the Scottish art community.
