HMS Spartan (1806)
HMS Spartan was a 38-gun, fifth-rate frigate of the British Royal Navy, launched in 1806. She was built at Woolwich Dockyard to the lines of the Leda-class frigate design.
Spartan saw significant action during the Napoleonic Wars and the War of 1812. Notably, she participated in the Battle of Maida in 1806, where she supported British troops on the Calabrian coast. In 1807, she was involved in operations in the Dardanelles.
Later, during the War of 1812, Spartan engaged in several notable encounters. In 1812, while under the command of Captain Brenton, she fought a notable action against a squadron of French frigates off the coast of Italy. The details of this battle, including casualties and the extent of damage, are well documented in naval historical records.
In 1822, Spartan was converted to a lazaretto (quarantine ship). She served in this capacity until being broken up in 1842.
