Steinsberg Castle (Graubünden)
Steinsberg Castle is a ruined castle located near the village of Pratval in the municipality of Domleschg/Domigliasca, in the canton of Graubünden, Switzerland. It stands on a prominent hilltop overlooking the Domleschg valley.
Historically, the castle was likely constructed in the 13th century, although definitive records of its founding are scarce. The Lords of Steinsberg, a local noble family, were its original owners and likely derived their name from the castle itself. They held considerable influence in the Domleschg region.
The castle's structure consisted of a keep, residential buildings, and a curtain wall surrounding the complex. Over time, the castle's ownership changed hands, passing to various noble families and eventually falling into disuse.
Today, Steinsberg Castle exists as a ruin. The remains of the keep and portions of the walls are still visible, offering a glimpse into the castle's former grandeur. While no longer inhabited or maintained, the site is accessible to the public and serves as a historical landmark in the Graubünden region. Archeological investigations have been conducted to learn more about the castle's history and construction.
