Coral Way (street)
Coral Way, also known as SW 22nd Street, is a historic road in Miami-Dade County, Florida. Originally named Calle Ocho (Eighth Street), it was renamed Coral Way in 1922 as part of George E. Merrick's plan for the city of Coral Gables. Merrick envisioned Coral Way as a grand boulevard connecting Coral Gables to downtown Miami.
The road is notable for its scenic parkway character, with a wide median strip planted with banyan trees. These trees, along with the roadway's design and historic structures along the route, contribute to its designation as a historic landmark. It passes through several neighborhoods, including Coral Gables, West Miami, and Little Havana.
Coral Way has seen several changes over the years but retains much of its original character. It remains a major east-west thoroughfare and a significant landmark in Miami-Dade County. The street is known for its mix of residential, commercial, and cultural establishments. Preserving the historic nature of Coral Way continues to be a priority for the local community and governing bodies.
