Creed (band)

Creed was an American rock band, formed in Tallahassee, Florida, in 1993. They are recognized as one of the most commercially successful rock acts of the late 1990s and early 2000s. The band's core members were vocalist Scott Stapp, guitarist Mark Tremonti, bassist Brian Marshall, and drummer Scott Phillips.

Creed's music is often categorized as post-grunge and alternative rock, incorporating elements of hard rock. They were known for their anthemic choruses, heavy guitar riffs, and introspective lyrics often dealing with themes of faith, struggle, and redemption. Scott Stapp's vocal style, characterized by its powerful and emotive delivery, was a defining feature of the band's sound.

The band released three consecutive multi-platinum albums: My Own Prison (1997), Human Clay (1999), and Weathered (2001). These albums spawned numerous hit singles, including "My Own Prison," "Higher," "With Arms Wide Open," "My Sacrifice," and "One Last Breath," which dominated rock radio and achieved mainstream success. Creed won a Grammy Award for Best Rock Song in 2001 for "With Arms Wide Open."

Despite their commercial success, Creed faced criticism for their perceived similarities to Pearl Jam and for Stapp's lyrical themes, which some considered pseudo-religious. Internal tensions and personal struggles led to the band's breakup in 2004.

Following Creed's disbandment, Tremonti and Phillips formed Alter Bridge with vocalist Myles Kennedy and bassist Brian Marshall. Stapp pursued a solo career.

In 2009, Creed reunited and released their fourth studio album, Full Circle. They toured in support of the album but ultimately disbanded again in 2012. As of 2024, there has been a formal announcement of a reunion tour slated for 2024, signaling a return to activity after a prolonged hiatus. The band’s legacy as one of the most successful and controversial rock acts of their era remains.
