Pedro Martinez (school administrator)
Pedro Martinez is a school administrator, most notably serving as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Chicago Public Schools (CPS) beginning in September 2021.
Prior to his role in Chicago, Martinez served as the Superintendent of the San Antonio Independent School District (SAISD) from 2015 to 2021. During his tenure in San Antonio, he focused on improving academic outcomes, expanding school choice options, and increasing teacher compensation.
Before entering public education administration, Martinez had a career in the corporate sector. He held leadership positions in various organizations, bringing business acumen and management skills to his subsequent roles in education.
Martinez holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Chicago and a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
As CEO of Chicago Public Schools, Martinez is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the third-largest school district in the United States. This includes managing a significant budget, implementing educational policies, overseeing school operations, and working to improve student achievement across the district. He has focused on initiatives such as addressing learning loss stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic, improving school safety, and fostering equitable access to resources and opportunities for all CPS students.
