Richard Peters (Atlanta)

Richard Peters (1810 – January 8, 1889) was an American businessman, entrepreneur, and planter best known for his role in the development of Atlanta, Georgia.

Born in Germantown, Pennsylvania, Peters moved to Georgia in the 1830s. He was instrumental in establishing transportation infrastructure in the region, particularly railroads. He secured a charter and oversaw the construction of the Georgia Railroad, which played a vital role in connecting Atlanta (then known as Terminus) to other parts of the state and the wider country.

Peters owned a large plantation near what is now downtown Atlanta. He also invested in various businesses, including banking and real estate. His business acumen contributed significantly to Atlanta's growth as a commercial center.

Peters served as the second mayor of Atlanta, holding office from 1855 to 1856. During his tenure, he focused on improving the city's infrastructure and addressing sanitation issues.

Peters Park, located in the Midtown neighborhood of Atlanta, is named in his honor. Several streets in Atlanta also bear the Peters name, recognizing his lasting impact on the city's development. His contributions were crucial in transforming a small railroad town into a major metropolitan area.
