Magelhaens (lunar crater)

Magelhaens is a prominent lunar impact crater located in the central highlands of the Moon. It lies just to the east of the larger crater Alfraganus, and west-southwest of the even larger crater Hipparchus.

Magelhaens is a relatively well-defined crater, exhibiting a sharp rim and terraced inner walls. The interior floor is somewhat irregular and contains a small central peak. The crater displays a ray system, indicating that it is a relatively young impact feature. These rays emanate outwards, overlapping the surrounding terrain and contributing to the crater's bright appearance during full Moon.

The crater is named in honor of Ferdinand Magellan (also spelled Magelhaens), the Portuguese explorer who led the first European voyage of circumnavigation of the Earth. This naming convention follows the practice of associating lunar features with notable scientists, explorers, and philosophers.

Magelhaens is visible through telescopes of moderate size, appearing as a bright, circular feature with a central peak. Its location in the central highlands makes it a convenient target for lunar observation.
