Terry Clarke (drummer)
Terry Clarke (born September 4, 1944) is a Canadian jazz drummer and educator. He is highly regarded for his versatility and has performed and recorded with a wide array of prominent jazz musicians.
Clarke began his professional career in Vancouver before moving to New York City in the 1960s. He quickly established himself as a sought-after drummer in the vibrant New York jazz scene. He is particularly known for his work in the trio Sphere, a band dedicated to the music of Thelonious Monk, which included Kenny Barron, Buster Williams, and Charlie Rouse (later Gary Bartz).
Throughout his career, Clarke has collaborated with numerous jazz luminaries including Jim Hall, Joe Henderson, Stan Getz, Chet Baker, Red Mitchell, Oscar Peterson, and Toshiko Akiyoshi-Lew Tabackin Big Band, among others. He has also led his own ensembles and released several albums under his own name.
Clarke's playing is characterized by its impeccable timekeeping, sensitive dynamics, and creative improvisational skills. His drumming is both supportive and inventive, enhancing the performances of the musicians he accompanies. He has received several accolades for his contributions to jazz music.
