SM UC-12
SM UC-12 was a German Type UC II minelaying submarine or U-boat in the German Imperial Navy (Kaiserliche Marine) during World War I. Commissioned on November 30, 1915, UC-12 was part of the Flanders Flotilla (Flandern I).
UC-12 operated primarily in the Mediterranean Sea and the Adriatic Sea. Her main role was laying mines in enemy shipping lanes and off strategic ports. During her service, UC-12 was responsible for sinking numerous Allied ships, including both naval and merchant vessels. These sinkings significantly disrupted Allied shipping in the region.
On March 16, 1916, UC-12 ran aground and was scuttled by her crew off of Isola delle Gallinara, Italy, to prevent her capture by enemy forces. All members of the crew were rescued by Italian forces. The wreck of UC-12 remains at the bottom of the sea. Her career, though relatively short, highlights the impact of German U-boats in disrupting maritime trade during World War I.
