His compositional style is characterized by its accessibility and melodic invention, making it appealing to both performers and audiences. He frequently drew inspiration from literature and history for his works.

Hurd's notable works include the operas The Widow’s Opera (1954), The Aspern Papers (1995), based on the novella by Henry James, and several operas for children, such as Jonah-Man, The Selfish Giant, and Hip! Hip! Hypnotism!. He also composed numerous cantatas, song cycles, and instrumental pieces.

Beyond his compositional activities, Hurd was a prolific writer, authoring biographies of composers such as Ivor Novello, Rutland Boughton, and Vincent Novello, as well as books on music education and appreciation. He was committed to promoting music to young people, and his contributions to the field of children’s opera remain significant.

Hurd lived for many years in Petersfield, Hampshire, where he was active in the local music scene. He died in 2006.
