Samidoun
Samidoun Palestinian Prisoner Solidarity Network is a network of activists and organizations that advocate for the rights of Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli prisons. The network describes itself as working to raise awareness about the conditions faced by Palestinian prisoners, organize campaigns in solidarity with them, and advocate for their release.
Samidoun operates internationally, with chapters and affiliates in various countries. Its activities include organizing demonstrations, educational events, and advocacy campaigns targeting governments and international organizations. The network publishes information about Palestinian prisoners, including their names, charges, and personal stories.
Samidoun has faced accusations of supporting terrorism and having links to designated terrorist organizations, specifically the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP). These accusations are based on alleged connections between Samidoun's leadership and members and the PFLP, as well as statements and materials promoted by the organization.
In February 2021, the German government banned Samidoun activities in Germany, citing its support for the PFLP. In September 2023, the German government officially banned Samidoun as an organization. Several other countries have taken similar steps or considered doing so.
Supporters of Samidoun maintain that it is a legitimate human rights organization focused on advocating for the rights of political prisoners and that accusations of supporting terrorism are politically motivated attempts to silence criticism of Israel's policies. They argue that the network's activities are protected under international law guaranteeing freedom of expression and association.
