WJW (TV)
WJW (TV), virtual channel 8 (UHF digital channel 31), is a Fox-affiliated television station licensed to Cleveland, Ohio, United States. The station is owned by Nexstar Media Group. WJW's studios are located on Dick Goddard Way (formerly Euclid Avenue) in Downtown Cleveland, and its transmitter is located in Parma, Ohio.
WJW-TV traces its history back to December 20, 1949, when it signed on as WXEL. Originally owned by Empire Coil Company, it was Cleveland's first VHF television station. The station changed its call letters to WJW-TV in 1954, reflecting its co-ownership with WJW radio (850 AM, now WKNR). Storer Broadcasting purchased both WJW radio and television in 1954.
Under Storer ownership, WJW-TV was a CBS affiliate, providing network programming and local news coverage. In 1977, Storer sold WJW radio, but retained WJW-TV. In 1985, Storer Broadcasting was acquired by Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. (KKR) in a leveraged buyout.
In 1987, Gillett Communications purchased WJW-TV, and in 1993, New World Communications acquired Gillett. This transaction led to a major affiliation switch. In 1994, New World announced a deal to affiliate its stations, including WJW-TV, with the Fox network. This affiliation switch occurred on September 3, 1994, ending WJW-TV's long association with CBS. CBS programming moved to WOIO (channel 19).
Since becoming a Fox affiliate, WJW-TV has been branded as "Fox 8." The station is known for its local news coverage, including its morning show, Fox 8 News in the Morning, and its popular weather team. The station also broadcasts local high school football games under the banner "Friday Night Touchdown."
WJW-TV is a major television station in the Cleveland market, providing news, entertainment, and sports programming to Northeast Ohio. The station has maintained a strong local presence throughout its history, adapting to changes in the media landscape and continuing to serve its viewers.
