Nemaki

Nemaki (寝巻) refers to a type of Japanese nightwear, similar to a lightweight kimono or yukata. It is commonly worn in onsen (hot spring resorts), ryokan (traditional Japanese inns), hospitals, and sometimes at home.

Traditionally, nemaki are made of cotton and are usually a plain, simple design. They often come in a single size, with the length adjustable by folding and securing the fabric at the waist using a sash or obi. The color and patterns vary, but often feature simple stripes or small, repetitive motifs. In onsen and ryokan, they are typically provided for guests to wear around the facilities, including to and from the baths.

The term "nemaki" literally translates to "sleeping wear." It is designed for comfort and ease of movement, making it suitable for sleeping or relaxing. While pajamas are increasingly common in modern Japan, nemaki remains a popular and practical choice, particularly in the contexts mentioned above.
