Johnny Iguana

Johnny Iguana (born Michael Smeriglio III, March 31, 1969) is an American blues and jazz pianist, organist, and composer. He is best known as the bandleader and pianist for the Chicago blues band Johnny Iguana and the Claudettes.

Iguana developed a reputation as a versatile and virtuosic keyboard player, capable of performing in a wide range of styles, from traditional blues and boogie-woogie to jazz and avant-garde music. Early in his career, he played with Junior Wells, Carey Bell, and numerous other blues artists in Chicago.

In 2011, he formed Johnny Iguana and the Claudettes, blending blues, jazz, and rockabilly with a theatrical performance style. The band has released several critically acclaimed albums, including "Infernal Piano Plot...Hatched!" (2013), "No Hotel" (2015), "Dance Scandal at the Gymnasium!" (2018), and "High Times in the Dark" (2020). Their music is characterized by Iguana's complex and energetic piano playing, combined with driving rhythms and a unique blend of genres.

Besides leading the Claudettes, Iguana has contributed to numerous recordings as a session musician and has also released solo albums showcasing his piano skills and compositions. He remains an active figure in the Chicago blues and jazz scenes.
