Acontias
Acontias is a genus of legless lizards in the family Scincidae (skinks). These reptiles are native to southern Africa. They are characterized by their elongated, snake-like bodies and the absence of functional limbs. While some species may possess small, vestigial limbs, they are generally concealed beneath the skin and do not aid in locomotion. Acontias lizards are typically fossorial, meaning they live primarily underground, burrowing through loose soil and leaf litter.
Due to their subterranean lifestyle, they are rarely seen. Their diet primarily consists of insects, larvae, and other small invertebrates found in the soil. Their coloration often blends with their surroundings, aiding in camouflage from predators.
Species within the Acontias genus exhibit viviparity, giving birth to live young rather than laying eggs. Their reproductive strategies and specific life history details vary depending on the species and geographic location.
