Protas

Protas, also sometimes seen as Prothas, is a relatively uncommon given name of Greek origin. It is etymologically derived from the Greek name Protasius. While not widely used in modern times, it has historical significance, particularly in religious contexts.

Historically, Protas is associated with Saint Protasius (also spelled Protatius), an early Christian martyr along with Saint Gervasius. These two saints are venerated in both the Catholic and Orthodox churches. According to tradition, they were twin brothers martyred during the reign of Emperor Diocletian in the late 3rd century AD. The relics of Saints Gervasius and Protasius are believed to have been discovered by Saint Ambrose of Milan in the 4th century, leading to increased veneration and churches being dedicated to them.

The name Protas, therefore, carries associations with religious faith, martyrdom, and historical figures revered within Christianity. Its relative obscurity today contrasts with its historical connections to influential early Christian figures.
