List of National Treasures of Japan (castles)
This article lists the castles in Japan that have been designated as National Treasures by the Japanese Agency for Cultural Affairs. This designation signifies the highest level of protection for cultural properties in Japan, indicating structures of particular historical and artistic value. Castles designated as National Treasures represent exceptional examples of Japanese castle architecture and are vital components of the nation's cultural heritage.
Currently, only a select few castles retain structures that qualify for this prestigious status. The National Treasure designation applies not to the entire castle complex, but to specific surviving buildings within the castle grounds, most commonly the main keep (tenshu), turrets (yagura), and gates (mon).
The castles on this list are organized alphabetically by prefecture:
- Aichi Prefecture: Nagoya Castle (partially destroyed during WWII, designation refers to pre-war remains – now lost)
- Ehime Prefecture: Matsuyama Castle
- Fukui Prefecture: Maruoka Castle
- Hyogo Prefecture: Himeji Castle
- Nagano Prefecture: Matsumoto Castle
- Shiga Prefecture: Hikone Castle
