West Division (WHA)

The West Division was one of the two divisions within the Western Hockey Association (WHA), a major professional ice hockey league that operated from 1972 to 1979. Created at the league's inception, the West Division housed teams primarily located in the western regions of North America, including cities in the United States and Canada.

Teams that competed in the West Division throughout its existence included the Los Angeles Sharks, San Diego Mariners, Vancouver Blazers, Phoenix Roadrunners, Calgary Broncos/Calgary Cowboys, and Edmonton Oilers. The specific team composition of the division varied from year to year due to team relocations, mergers, and occasional expansion.

The West Division champion would advance to the WHA playoffs, with the ultimate goal of competing for the Avco World Trophy, the league's championship trophy. The composition and success of the division's teams played a significant role in the overall competitiveness and eventual merger of the WHA into the National Hockey League (NHL). The Edmonton Oilers were the only West Division team to win the Avco World Trophy.
