Level 42
Level 42 is a British jazz-funk band formed in 1979 on the Isle of Wight. The band is best known for their high-level musicianship, particularly the bass playing of Mark King, and their commercially successful singles in the 1980s, blending funk, jazz, and pop elements.
The original lineup consisted of Mark King (bass, vocals), Mike Lindup (keyboards, vocals), Phil Gould (drums), and Rowland "Boon" Gould (guitar). Their early sound was characterized by complex instrumental arrangements and a focus on live performance.
Level 42 achieved mainstream success with albums like "World Machine" (1985) and "Running in the Family" (1987), which featured hit singles such as "Something About You," "Lessons in Love," and "Running in the Family." These songs showcased a more polished and accessible sound, incorporating elements of soul and R&B.
The band has undergone several lineup changes throughout its history. The Gould brothers left in the late 1980s, and other members have joined and departed over the years. Despite these changes, Mark King has remained the consistent frontman and driving force behind Level 42.
Level 42 continues to tour and record, maintaining a loyal fan base and influencing contemporary musicians with their distinctive blend of genres and technical proficiency. They are considered one of the key bands of the 1980s British music scene and a significant contributor to the jazz-funk genre.
