Liverpool City (1906)
Liverpool City (1906) was an association football club based in Liverpool, England, which existed for a single season in 1906-1907. The club was formed after a schism within the existing Liverpool Football Association, specifically over the issue of amateurism versus professionalism. A group of individuals, believing that the Liverpool FA was unfairly biased towards amateur clubs, broke away and founded Liverpool City as a fully professional outfit.
The club played its home matches at Breckfield Road North. They competed in the Lancashire Combination, a league predominantly featuring reserve teams of Football League clubs and smaller independent sides. Liverpool City struggled to achieve success on the field and faced significant financial difficulties.
The club ultimately folded at the end of its inaugural and only season in 1907. The exact reasons for its collapse are not fully documented but are attributed to a combination of poor results, financial instability, and a lack of sustained local support, particularly in a city already dominated by the presence of Liverpool and Everton. There is no direct connection between this club and the modern-day city of Liverpool, although the existence of Liverpool City (1906) highlights a period of intense debate surrounding the professionalization of football in the early 20th century.
