FRET (magazine)
FRET was a short-lived, but influential, American music magazine published in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Its focus was primarily on fretted string instruments, particularly acoustic guitar, banjo, mandolin, and dobro, but also included electric guitar and bass guitar. Unlike many contemporary guitar magazines which leaned heavily into rock or blues genres, FRET took a broader approach, covering a wide range of musical styles including bluegrass, folk, jazz, classical, and contemporary instrumental music.
The magazine was known for its in-depth interviews with prominent musicians, detailed instrument reviews, instructional columns covering playing techniques and maintenance, and transcriptions of notable songs. It also featured articles on instrument construction, history, and repair.
FRET aimed to cater to both serious musicians and hobbyists, providing practical information alongside more scholarly content. Its emphasis on a diverse range of fretted instruments and musical styles contributed significantly to the growth and appreciation of these instruments, particularly in the acoustic music scene. Although publication ceased, back issues of FRET remain valuable resources for musicians and instrument enthusiasts due to the quality of its writing and the depth of its coverage.
