Diego Pérez (footballer)

Diego Fernando Pérez Aguado (born May 18, 1980) is a Uruguayan former professional footballer who played as a defensive midfielder. Known for his tenacious tackling and energetic style, Pérez was a mainstay of the Uruguayan national team for over a decade.

Club Career

Pérez began his professional career with Defensor Sporting in Uruguay, where he quickly established himself as a key player. His performances earned him a move to Peñarol, another of Uruguay's major clubs. He later moved to Europe, playing for Italian clubs Bologna, where he spent several seasons, and Genoa. He concluded his European career with a stint at Serie A side, before moving to Uruguay once more.

International Career

Pérez made his debut for the Uruguay national team in 2001. He represented Uruguay at two FIFA World Cups (2010 and 2014) and three Copa América tournaments (2004, 2007, and 2011). He was a key member of the Uruguay team that reached the semi-finals of the 2010 World Cup and won the 2011 Copa América. He was known for his combative style and commitment on the field.
