Batista (footballer, born 1955)

João Batista da Silva, commonly known as Batista (born 8 March 1955 in Porto Alegre), is a retired Brazilian footballer who played as a central defender.

Batista began his career with Internacional, where he enjoyed considerable success, winning multiple Campeonato Gaúcho titles and the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A in 1979. He was known for his strong tackling and aerial ability.

He also played for Grêmio, Palmeiras, and Avaí, among other clubs in Brazil.

Batista was a member of the Brazil national team, representing his country at the 1978 FIFA World Cup in Argentina. He earned 38 caps for Brazil between 1976 and 1983.

After retiring from professional football, Batista has occasionally been involved in coaching and management roles at a lower level.
