Kinskey

Kinskey was the stage name of actor Iosif Kurtzman (1885-1975), a Russian-born American character actor best known for his role as Maurice in the classic film Casablanca (1942).

Kinskey emigrated to the United States in 1924, after a period acting in Europe following his escape from Russia. He was a prolific character actor, appearing in over 200 films and television shows. He was often cast in comedic roles, playing eccentric or foreign characters, frequently with a thick accent.

While he had numerous roles throughout his career, his portrayal of Maurice, the bartender at Rick's Café Américain in Casablanca, remains his most recognizable and memorable. His performance, characterized by his nervous demeanor and attempts to secure passage to America, has become iconic.

Beyond Casablanca, some of Kinskey's other notable film appearances include roles in Duck Soup (1933), Modern Times (1936), and His Girl Friday (1940). He also made appearances in various television series during the 1950s and 1960s.
