Issé (opera)
Issé is a pastorale héroïque in a prologue and five acts by André Cardinal Destouches. The libretto was written by Antoine Houdar de la Motte. It was first performed on 7 July 1697 at the Château de Fontainebleau and subsequently at the Académie Royale de Musique (Paris Opera) on 17 December 1697.
The opera is based on the mythological story of Issé, a nymph loved by Apollo. The plot revolves around Apollo's pursuit of Issé, despite her love for another mortal, Philémon. Jealousy, disguise, and divine intervention are central themes in the narrative.
Issé was one of Destouches' most successful operas and remained in the repertoire for several decades. It is notable for its graceful melodies, elaborate orchestration, and dramatic use of chorus and dance, typical of the French baroque opera style. It features numerous airs, duets, and ensemble pieces that showcase the vocal talents of the performers. Its popularity helped to solidify Destouches' reputation as a leading composer of his time.
