Waterhen River (Saskatchewan)

The Waterhen River is a river located in west-central Saskatchewan, Canada. It flows generally eastward from Waterhen Lake into the west end of Meadow Lake. The river is part of the Churchill River drainage basin.

The river's course meanders through a largely boreal forest landscape, draining numerous small lakes and wetlands along its path. Its watershed is characterized by muskeg, black spruce forests, and mixed-wood stands. The area surrounding the Waterhen River is sparsely populated, with several small communities and First Nations reserves located nearby.

The Waterhen River is used for recreational activities such as canoeing, kayaking, and fishing. The river and its surrounding lakes are home to various fish species, including northern pike, walleye, and yellow perch. Resource extraction, including forestry and mineral exploration, also occurs within the watershed.

Concerns exist regarding the water quality of the Waterhen River, due to agricultural runoff and industrial activities in the region. Ongoing monitoring efforts are in place to assess and manage the health of the river ecosystem. The river's name originates from the presence of waterfowl, particularly ducks and coots, in the area.
