The Waiting (film)
The Waiting is a 2005 American psychological thriller film directed by Chris Borrelli and starring Ryan Reynolds, Anna Faris, and Justin Long. The plot revolves around two waiters, Mitch (Reynolds) and Dean (Long), who devise a plan to play a cruel prank on the wait staff at ShenaniganZ, a fictional chain restaurant.
Dean overhears that a fellow waiter received a large settlement after an accident at work. Believing they can exploit the system, Mitch suggests staging an accident to earn similar compensation. The "accident" involves Mitch faking an injury, leading to increasingly elaborate and disturbing pranks played on him by Dean and other restaurant employees.
The film explores themes of workplace boredom, revenge, and the psychological effects of manipulation. As the pranks escalate, the line between humor and cruelty blurs, and the characters' relationships become strained. The film follows the fallout from the initial scheme, examining the consequences of their actions on themselves and others around them, including Serena (Faris), a fellow waitress.
The Waiting is known for its dark humor, uncomfortable scenarios, and exploration of the dynamics within a low-wage service industry environment. It received mixed reviews upon release, with some critics praising its edgy humor and performances, while others criticized its mean-spiritedness and lack of depth.
