Paul Lewis (pianist)

Paul Lewis (born 1972) is a British classical pianist, widely regarded for his interpretations of the works of Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms, and Haydn.

Lewis studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama with Joan Havill. He is known for his intellectual and emotionally profound performances, characterized by clarity of articulation, structural awareness, and a deep understanding of the composer's intentions.

He has performed with leading orchestras worldwide, including the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra, the Philharmonia Orchestra, and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. He has also given recitals in prestigious venues such as the Musikverein in Vienna, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, and Carnegie Hall in New York.

Lewis has recorded extensively for Harmonia Mundi. His discography includes complete cycles of Beethoven's piano sonatas and concertos, as well as Schubert's piano sonatas and song cycles. These recordings have received numerous awards and critical acclaim.

He is also a dedicated chamber musician and has collaborated with a variety of artists, including Mark Padmore and the Doric String Quartet.

Paul Lewis has received honorary doctorates from several universities, including the University of Liverpool and the University of Southampton. He was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2016 for services to music.
