Coalshaw Green

Coalshaw Green is a small hamlet located within the civil parish of Crompton in the Metropolitan Borough of Oldham, Greater Manchester, England. It lies approximately 1.5 miles (2.4 km) north of Shaw and Crompton town centre, and historically formed part of Lancashire.

The area is largely rural and agricultural, characterized by farmland and scattered residential properties. While lacking significant commercial development, Coalshaw Green offers a quiet, rural setting within relatively close proximity to the amenities of larger towns nearby.

Historically, like much of Crompton, Coalshaw Green's inhabitants were involved in agriculture and, during the Industrial Revolution, likely found employment in the textile mills that proliferated in the surrounding area. Remnants of this industrial past can still be seen in the local architecture and landscape.

The name "Coalshaw Green" likely derives from Old English elements relating to woodland (shaw) and perhaps coal production or charcoal burning activity, with "Green" indicating a village green or common area. The exact etymology, however, can be difficult to definitively ascertain.
