Amlwch Port
Amlwch Port is a harbour located in the town of Amlwch, on the north coast of Anglesey, Wales. It is notable for its historical association with copper mining and export during the 18th and 19th centuries, particularly from the nearby Parys Mountain.
Historically, Amlwch was a small fishing village. The discovery of vast copper deposits on Parys Mountain in 1768 transformed it into a bustling industrial port. The port was specifically engineered to facilitate the shipping of copper ore and other related products, such as vitriol, produced from the mines.
The harbour's construction included several basins, quays, and wharves to handle the large volume of trade. A number of associated industries and services developed around the port, including shipbuilding, rope making, and smelting activities.
The decline of copper mining in the late 19th century led to a significant decrease in the port's activity. Today, Amlwch Port serves primarily as a recreational harbour and marina, catering to leisure craft and fishing boats. The harbour area retains significant historical interest, with surviving structures and remnants of its industrial past, including the iconic watchtower. The harbour is a popular destination for tourists interested in industrial heritage. The Amlwch Copper Kingdom museum, located nearby, provides further information about the port's and the area's history.
