Bhoomika (film)
Bhoomika (English: The Role) is a 1977 Indian Hindi-language film directed by Shyam Benegal. It stars Smita Patil in the title role alongside Amol Palekar, Naseeruddin Shah, and Anant Nag.
The film is a biographical account inspired by the life of Marathi stage and screen actress Hansa Wadkar, tracing her tumultuous journey through marriage, career, and personal relationships. Bhoomika explores themes of female agency, societal expectations, and the challenges faced by women in the entertainment industry during the 1940s and 50s.
The narrative follows Usha (played by Smita Patil) as she navigates her arranged marriage to a much older man, Keshav Dalvi (Amol Palekar), who manages her burgeoning acting career. Restless and unfulfilled, she seeks emotional and physical connection in extramarital relationships, including with a film director, Rajan (Naseeruddin Shah), and a charismatic revolutionary, Sunil Verma (Anant Nag).
Bhoomika is noted for its strong female protagonist, its realistic portrayal of the film industry, and its nuanced exploration of complex human relationships. Smita Patil's performance was critically acclaimed and earned her the National Film Award for Best Actress. The film also won the Filmfare Award for Best Film.
