Mark Scanlon (cyclist)
Mark Scanlon (born October 10, 1980) is a former professional road racing cyclist from Ireland. He is best known for winning the Junior Road Race World Championship in 1998 in Valkenburg, Netherlands. This victory made him a national hero in Ireland and raised significant expectations for his professional career.
Scanlon turned professional in 2002, riding for the Linda McCartney Racing Team. Following the team's demise, he joined Ag2r Prévoyance in 2003, where he spent several seasons. He later rode for Toyota-United Pro Cycling Team in 2006.
During his professional career, Scanlon competed in various prestigious races, including the Giro d'Italia. Although he did not achieve the same level of success as he had in his junior years, he remained a respected and dedicated cyclist.
Scanlon retired from professional cycling in 2007, citing a loss of passion for the sport and an inability to reach his earlier potential. Since retiring, he has largely remained out of the public eye.
