Septimus Heap (character)
Septimus Heap is the titular protagonist of Angie Sage's Septimus Heap series of fantasy novels. He is the seventh son of a seventh son, and possesses immense magical power. At birth, he is mistakenly declared dead and swapped with a commoner boy, leaving him to grow up in the forest with a witch named Jenna and a pack of werewolves.
Unbeknownst to him for the first part of the series, Septimus is destined to become the Extraordinary Wizard. He displays numerous magical abilities, including healing, transmutation, and communicating with ghosts. Throughout the series, he struggles to control and understand his powers, facing various challenges and enemies. He eventually discovers his true identity and begins his formal training as a wizard under the tutelage of Marcia Overstrand, the Extraordinary Wizard.
Septimus is characterized as a kind, brave, and loyal individual. He is devoted to his family and friends and is always willing to help those in need. His inherent goodness often clashes with the darker aspects of magic, and he grapples with the ethical implications of wielding such power. He is particularly close to Jenna, who becomes a sister figure to him, and Nicko, one of his adopted brothers. His main companions throughout his adventures include Jenna, Nicko, Beetle (a scribe), and Spit Fyre, a dragon.
The series chronicles Septimus's journey from a seemingly ordinary boy to a powerful wizard, exploring themes of family, friendship, good versus evil, and the responsibilities that come with wielding great power. His character development is central to the overall narrative, showcasing his growth in skill, confidence, and understanding of the magical world.
