Tryfan

Tryfan is a mountain in the Ogwen Valley, Snowdonia, North Wales. It forms part of the Glyderau group and is renowned for its distinctive, jagged profile, making it one of the most recognizable and popular mountains in the area for scrambling and rock climbing.

Geography and Geology:

Tryfan's name is believed to derive from the Welsh words "tri" (three) and "fan" (peak), referring to its three prominent summits. The mountain is primarily composed of volcanic rocks from the Ordovician period. Its rugged terrain is characterized by steep slopes, exposed rock faces, and loose scree.

Climbing and Scrambling:

Tryfan is a popular destination for experienced hill walkers and climbers. The North Ridge is a classic scramble, offering exhilarating exposure and challenging terrain. The South Ridge provides a less demanding, but still enjoyable, route to the summit. Numerous rock climbing routes exist on Tryfan's faces, catering to a variety of skill levels.

Features and Summits:

The three main summits of Tryfan are the North Peak, the Middle Peak, and the South Peak. The North Peak is the highest. At the summit are two prominent monoliths named "Adam and Eve." Tradition dictates that one must jump between these stones, a feat considered daring due to the significant drop on either side.

Conservation:

Tryfan is located within Eryri National Park (Snowdonia National Park), and conservation efforts are in place to protect its fragile environment. Responsible climbing and walking practices are encouraged to minimize erosion and disturbance to the mountain's flora and fauna.
