Freedom Fighters (video game)
Freedom Fighters is a third-person shooter video game developed by IO Interactive and published by Electronic Arts. It was released in 2003 for the PlayStation 2, Xbox, GameCube, and Microsoft Windows.
The game is set in an alternate history where the Soviet Union has invaded and occupied the United States. The player takes on the role of Chris Stone, a plumber who becomes a leader in the American resistance movement fighting to liberate New York City.
Gameplay revolves around leading a squad of up to 12 resistance fighters, giving them commands to attack, defend, follow, or man specific emplacements like mounted guns. The "charisma" system allows the player to recruit more fighters by performing heroic actions and increasing their reputation among the resistance. Charisma points are earned by completing objectives, defeating enemies, and rescuing civilians.
Freedom Fighters features a linear campaign mode with a series of interconnected missions across various locations in New York City. Objectives include destroying Soviet infrastructure, rescuing captured resistance members, and securing key strategic points. The game's atmosphere is heavily inspired by Cold War era propaganda and themes of patriotism and resistance against oppression.
