BMW GTP
The BMW GTP was a sports prototype racing car built by March Engineering and powered by a BMW M88/2 inline-6 engine. It was designed to compete in the IMSA GTP championship in the United States from 1981 to 1986.
The car debuted at Road Atlanta in 1981. While showing flashes of speed, the BMW GTP suffered from reliability issues throughout its career. Despite some strong qualifying performances and occasional podium finishes, the car never achieved a race win in the IMSA GTP series.
Several variations of the chassis were developed by March, with BMW providing the engines. Drivers who piloted the BMW GTP included David Hobbs, John Watson, and Davy Jones.
The program was eventually discontinued, with BMW focusing its efforts on other forms of motorsport. The BMW GTP represents an early foray for BMW into the premier sports prototype class in North America, albeit one that did not ultimately meet its competitive goals.
