Tsarnaev

Tsarnaev refers primarily to two brothers of Chechen descent who perpetrated the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013:

• Dzhokhar Tsarnaev (born 1993): Convicted of multiple federal charges related to the Boston Marathon bombing and the subsequent murder of an MIT police officer. He was sentenced to death, although his sentence has been under legal challenge.

• Tamerlan Tsarnaev (1986 – 2013): Dzhokhar's older brother. He died in a shootout with police several days after the bombing.

The Tsarnaev brothers emigrated to the United States from Kyrgyzstan. They claimed to be motivated by extremist Islamic beliefs and anger at the U.S. involvement in wars in Muslim countries. The Boston Marathon bombing resulted in significant casualties and widespread fear, leading to a massive manhunt for the perpetrators. The event and the subsequent trial of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev sparked national and international discussions about terrorism, immigration, and the death penalty.
