Tyrus (beetle)
Tyrus is a genus of beetles belonging to the family Staphylinidae, often referred to as rove beetles. These beetles are generally small in size and characterized by their short elytra (wing covers) which expose much of their abdomen.
Tyrus beetles are typically found in association with ant nests or termite colonies, exhibiting myrmecophilous or termitophilous behavior, respectively. They are thought to feed on mites, other small arthropods, or detritus within the nests. Some species may also scavenge on the waste products of their host insects.
The genus Tyrus is distributed globally, although some species have restricted geographic ranges. Identification to the species level often requires careful examination of minute morphological characteristics, including the shape and structure of the antennae, legs, and genitalia. The taxonomy of the genus is complex and ongoing research may lead to further revisions.
