Gernsheim
Gernsheim is a town located in the Groß-Gerau district in Hesse, Germany. It lies on the Rhine River, approximately 15 kilometers southwest of Darmstadt.
Historically, Gernsheim was a significant trading center due to its location on the Rhine. It received town privileges in the 13th century. The town's history is intertwined with the Holy Roman Empire, and it was once a free imperial city.
Gutenberg, the inventor of movable type printing, lived in Gernsheim for a period, although his birthplace is Mainz. Gernsheim considers itself a "Gutenbergstadt" (Gutenberg City) in recognition of this connection. A Gutenberg Museum is located in the town.
