Durango (city)

Durango is a Home Rule Municipality that is the county seat and the most populous municipality of La Plata County, Colorado, United States. Located in southwestern Colorado, it is situated along the Animas River and is a gateway to the San Juan Mountains.

History:

Founded in 1880 by the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad, Durango initially served as a transportation hub for mining operations in the San Juan Mountains. The town's name derives from Durango, Mexico, reflecting the vision of its founders who hoped the area's mineral riches would rival those of the Mexican city. The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, still operating today, played a crucial role in the region's economic development.

Geography:

Durango is located in a valley surrounded by mountains. The Animas River flows through the center of the city. The climate is semi-arid, with warm summers and cold, snowy winters.
