Up Against It (album)

Up Against It is an album by British rock band Squeeze, released in 1999. It is essentially a collection of re-recordings of earlier Squeeze songs, performed acoustically or in stripped-down arrangements. The title references a television play by Joe Orton that the band initially intended to adapt into a musical in the late 1980s, before legal complications prevented the project from moving forward.

While not a new studio album of original material, Up Against It offered fans a different perspective on Squeeze's established repertoire. The album allowed listeners to appreciate the songwriting of Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook in a more intimate and direct setting, highlighting the lyrical content and melodic structures of the songs.

The tracklist includes re-worked versions of popular Squeeze songs such as "Tempted," "Black Coffee in Bed," and "Cool for Cats." The album's reception was generally positive, with many critics praising the fresh interpretations of familiar material. However, some considered it a stopgap release rather than a major artistic statement.
