CCM (bicycle company)
CCM, originally an acronym for Canada Cycle & Motor Co. Limited, is a Canadian brand of bicycles. The company was founded in 1899 in Weston, Ontario, after the merger of four major Canadian bicycle manufacturers: Massey-Harris, Goold, Welland Vale, and Hyslop. The merger was partly a response to the declining bicycle market and the rise of the automobile industry.
Initially, CCM manufactured bicycles but quickly expanded into producing hockey equipment, leveraging its metalworking capabilities. CCM became a prominent supplier of hockey skates and other gear, achieving significant brand recognition in the sport.
Over the years, CCM has undergone several ownership changes and restructurings. The bicycle division has been separated from the hockey equipment side of the business. While CCM hockey equipment continues to be a major brand, the CCM bicycle brand has been sold and licensed to various companies.
Today, CCM bicycles are generally targeted toward the mass market and are sold through retailers such as Canadian Tire. The current models encompass a range of types, including mountain bikes, road bikes, hybrid bikes, and children's bikes. While the brand retains a connection to its Canadian heritage, the manufacturing is typically done overseas. The brand's history as a prominent Canadian manufacturer has contributed to its enduring recognition among consumers.
