Rūmī (crater)

Rūmī is a relatively small lunar impact crater that lies on the far side of the Moon. It is located within the Mare Orientale, a large impact basin. Specifically, Rūmī is situated on the outer skirt of ejecta surrounding the inner Montes Rook ring of mountains.

The crater is named after the 13th-century Persian poet Jalāl ad-Dīn Muhammad Rūmī.

Rūmī is a bowl-shaped crater with a relatively simple, sharp-edged rim. The interior slopes down to a small floor. There is no significant central peak or terracing within the crater. Due to its location within the Mare Orientale basin, the surrounding terrain is rugged and characterized by radial grooves and ridges formed during the basin-forming impact event. Rūmī is a relatively young crater compared to the age of the Mare Orientale basin itself, as it overlies the basin's ejecta blanket.
