Isaac Hawkins Browne (coal owner)

Isaac Hawkins Browne (1745-1818) was a British coal owner, merchant, and politician. He was the son of Isaac Hawkins Browne (1705-1760), a celebrated poet and Member of Parliament. The younger Browne inherited substantial estates, including coal mines in the Coalbrookdale area of Shropshire, which formed the basis of his wealth.

Browne actively managed and expanded his coal interests, playing a significant role in the industrial development of the region. He was involved in various aspects of the coal trade, including mining, transportation via the Severn River, and sales.

In addition to his business pursuits, Browne followed in his father's footsteps and entered politics. He served as the Member of Parliament for Bridgnorth from 1784 to 1812. As an MP, he generally supported the policies of William Pitt the Younger.

Browne was known for his philanthropic activities in Shropshire. He supported local charities and initiatives aimed at improving the lives of the working class. He also maintained a keen interest in religious and intellectual matters, reflecting the influence of his father.

He married Henrietta Hay, daughter of Edward Hay, Governor of Barbados, in 1788. They had several children, including Isaac Hawkins Browne (1792-1861), who also became a Member of Parliament. Isaac Hawkins Browne (coal owner) died in 1818, leaving a considerable legacy as a successful industrialist, politician, and benefactor.
