Traffic (band)

Traffic were a British rock band, formed in Birmingham, England, in 1967. The original lineup consisted of Steve Winwood, Jim Capaldi, Chris Wood, and Dave Mason. They were known for their psychedelic rock and progressive rock sound, blending elements of jazz, blues, and soul.

The band's early albums, such as Mr. Fantasy (1967) and Traffic (1968), showcased their eclectic musical style and improvisational skills. Dave Mason departed the band intermittently throughout their history, pursuing a solo career.

Traffic disbanded in 1969 but reunited in 1970 without Mason. Their subsequent albums, including John Barleycorn Must Die (1970) and The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys (1971), are considered highlights of their career and are known for their complex arrangements and extended instrumental jams.

Further lineup changes occurred in the 1970s, and the band officially dissolved again in 1974. Winwood continued his solo career, while Capaldi pursued his own musical endeavors.

Traffic briefly reunited in 1994 with Winwood, Capaldi, and some new musicians, releasing the album Far from Home.

Traffic were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004. Their influence on progressive rock and jazz fusion is widely acknowledged. Jim Capaldi died in 2005, and Chris Wood died in 1983. Steve Winwood continues to tour and record as a solo artist.
