Women (band)

Women was a Canadian noise rock band formed in Calgary, Alberta in 2007. The band consisted of Patrick Flegel (vocals, guitar), Christopher Reimer (guitar), Matthew Flegel (bass), and Michael Wallace (drums).

Known for their angular guitar riffs, complex song structures, and lo-fi production, Women released two critically acclaimed albums: Women (2008) and Public Strain (2010), both on Jagjaguwar. Their sound drew comparisons to bands like Wire, The Fall, and early Sonic Youth, incorporating elements of post-punk, art rock, and experimental music.

Women disbanded in 2012 following the death of guitarist Christopher Reimer. Reimer's unexpected passing deeply impacted the band, leading to their decision to cease performing under the Women name. The remaining members have since pursued other musical projects. Patrick Flegel now performs under the name Cindy Lee. Matthew Flegel and Michael Wallace formed the band Viet Cong, which later changed its name to Preoccupations.

Despite their relatively short lifespan, Women's music has had a lasting influence on indie rock and continues to be celebrated for its originality and innovative sound. Their albums remain highly regarded and are considered seminal works in the noise rock genre.
